pomegranates at the beginning of this week, we thought that we should end the week with them as well, with this
Weekend Project that is a perfect accent to any TGIF happy hour — make your own grenadine.
Grenadine is the sweet/tart cousin to simple syrup that gives a distintive blush to classic cocktails like the Singapore Sling, the Monkey Gland, the Hurricane, the Tequila Sunrise, as well as the original mocktail — The Shirley Temple. There are plenty of bottled options available, but making your own gives a fresher more vibrant taste, allows you to control the sweetness, lets you avoid the corn syrup and food colorings that are common in many commercial brands, and is crazy simple.
What You Need:
1 cup unsweetened — preferably fresh — pomegranate juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
Saucepan
Clean bottle for storage
What To Do:
Simmer juice and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally for about 15, until syrup is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Let cool and then pour into Store in the fridge for about two weeks. Once you master the basic recipe, you can tweak with some citrus zest, orange blossom water, a splash of lemon juice, or pomegranate molasses.
