Philadelphia is always a most excellent eating and drinking town, but this week seems particularly brilliant. The City of Brotherly Love, cheesesteaks and soft pretzels celebrated the opening of their first Shake Shack with the requisite crazy long lines. Today is the second installments of #FoieFridays, which has us particularly intrigued by the chartreuse foie gras torchon with buttermilk granita, peas, strawberries, and rye crumble at Supper, the “Menage a Foie” — seared foie gras, pastrami-cured foie gras, and foie gras ice cream at London Grill and the spiked foie gras Stewart’s Root Beer float at Ela. And Philly Beer Week runs through Sunday. In honor of Philly Beer Week, here are our 5 favorite Pennsylvania craft brews.
Sly Fox. This Pottstown Pa brewery has been making award winning beers since 1995. Their Saison Vos is a golden orange Belgian style farmhouse ale, fermented with a special proprietary yeast that gives the beer its dry spicy character.
Victory Brewing Company Based in Downington, this brewery has won awards for their ales and stouts, but we are particularly partial towards their seasonal Summer Love Ale, a honey-hued, lemony fresh and extremely drinkable beer that is equally appealing to craft-brew newbies and serious hop-heads alike.
Tröegs Brewing Company Tröegs was founded by bother John and Chris Trogner in 1996. The name Tröegs is a combination of a nickname derived from the surname Trogner and the Dutch word kroeg, which means pub. Their Java Head Stout starts with a coffee sweetness before moving on to a slightly hop bitterness and then to a malty finish.
Stoudt's Brewing. This brewery and pub in Adamstown offers up some stellar seasonal beers, including the full-bodied, amber-colored, creamy and citrus Revel Red.
Yuengling. America's oldest brewery has been producing pints since 1829. While they are less extreme and experimental than most craft brewers, there is something to be said for not messing with success and we are fans of the flagship Lager.
