Michelin has announced its annual ranking of New York City's finest restaurants for 2018. Among the list are seven restaurants that were awarded new stars in the 2018 guide. Making big news, however, is Jean-Georges Vongerichten's flagship, Jean-Georges, taking a slide down to two stars.
The rating system is based on cuisine, service and décor and the process in which a restaurant is chosen to be added to the list remains highly secretive. Those restaurants that are worthy are rated one to three stars. One star denotes "high quality cooking, worth a stop", two starts represents establishments with "excellent cooking" and is "worth a detour". The coveted three stars is the ultimate accolade and goes to restaurants with "exceptional cuisine and worth a special journey". Only the world's absolute greatest restaurants attain a third star.
