Crop Freeze in Mexico Driving Food Prices Up, Availability Down

Freezing temperatures have hit a broad area of growing regions in Mexico, from Hermosillo in the north all the way south to Los Mochis and even south of Culiacan. Sysco announced that early crop losses are being reported between 80-100%. Effected crops are green beans, eggplant, cucumbers, squash, peppers, asparagus, and round and roma tomatoes. This time of year Florida also supplies many of these same crops, however the state has been hit with freezes as well and many producers had been turning to Mexico to meet their commitments. The market is expected to be impacted for at least the next 30-60 days.
