French Truffle Farmer Shoots Suspected Thief; Fellow Truffle Farmers March to Support the Shooter

French truffle farmer Laurent Rimbaud, 32, is on trial for shooting a trespasser at his farm in the village of Grignan, France. Rimbaud told police that he was out 'patrolling' his truffle fields when he was startled by the trespasser who he thought was armed. The man was shot twice, in the thigh and the head, and died shortly afterwards. He was found with a knife for cutting truffles but no gun.

Amazingly enough, roughly 250 supporters immediately formed a march to show support for Rimbaud. The supporters in the march claimed they all live in fear of truffle poachers digging through their fields at night and "their livelihoods were under threat." Mature black truffles from southern France can sell between €800-€1000 per kilo.
