Louisiana lost between 20% and 50% of its oyster beds due to the Deepwater Horizon disaster. What's surprising is that 0% was directly lost because of the resulting oil spill. To protect the fragile marshlands from being destroyed by the oil, Gov. Bobby Jindal ordered freshwater diversions from the Mississippi River be opened to push any oil out to sea. This left the oyster beds with an unsuitable fresh water environment. Those diversions are now being shut down but because too much fresh water can kill off oyster beds, it will still take about two years for the oyster beds to return to full production.
