UPDATE: NPR: Recall expanded to 500 Million eggs.

Iowa egg producer Wright County Egg is recalling 228 million eggs after being linked to an outbreak of salmonella. The eggs have been distributed around the country and branded under the names Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemp. Yahoo! News has AP video covering the story.

Dr. Jeff Farrar, FDA's associate commissioner for food protection, says 20 FDA investigators are at the Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms, and could be there until next week.

Farrar said the chicks that came to the farms from a Minnesota hatchery are found to have been free of illness, so contamination probably occurred at the two Iowa locations. He said the FDA is looking at eight different sites on the farms where laying hens were reared as well as other locations.
